Breeders’ Education

Breeders must understand the purpose for which a Spinone exists and understand the form that is required for the function of the breed as a versatile hunting dog.

The Purpose of the Spinone Breeders’ Education Committee is to encourage and promote quality in the breeding of purebred Spinoni and to do all that is possible to bring their inherent qualities to perfection. The “blueprint” for our breed is the American Kennel Club Official Standard of the Spinone Italiano.

Producing a dog that conforms to the Standard of the breed does not happen by accident. Since our blueprint is not an engineering blueprint that can be followed the same way a builder would construct a house, we are left to interpret words and phrases, learn from photos, written explanations, and those with experience who have come before us.

They all have four legs, two ears, and all the parts that make up what we recognize as a dog. But they vary from the tiny Chihuahua to the tall Great Dane and the heavy Mastiff. Even within a specific breed, the variety can be stunning. Consider the evolution of several well-known breeds.

The evolution of a few breeds can be a warning to us, as Spinone breeders, to breed with intent and purpose. We may see a need to correct something for the well-being of the breed or our own lines such as a short upper arm or over-angulation, but we MUST be careful to stay true to the existing blueprint and not exaggerate nor eliminate the characteristics that make a Spinone a Spinone.

The domestic dog is the most phenotypically diverse mammal on the planet.

The Form and Function Project

BREEDING TO PRESERVE THE PURPOSE OF THE SPINONE

The versatile Spinone hunts, tracks, points and retrieves "fur & feather" such as upland birds, waterfowl and rabbits.

Built to hunt on varied terrain, the Spinone is methodical and purposeful, conserving energy by alternating between trotting and galloping giving them the endurance to hunt all day. Spinone will hunt independently or in cooperation with a brace mate.

Additionally, Spinone are quite capable of excelling at other canine activities such as therapy work, agility, obedience, rally, scent work, tracking, and so much more. And lest we forget, they make excellent family companions.

To be clear, however, versatile when applied to Spinoni means versatile hunting dog.

The SCOA Breeders’ Education Committee has created the below presentation to educate Spinone breeders on the importance of preserving Form and Function.

Breeders’ Education Committee

The Spinone is a versatile hunting breed — meaning a dog that hunts in all terrains on land and in water, points, and retrieves game.

The purpose of Breeders' Education is to encourage and promote quality in the breeding of pure-bred Spinoni and to do all that is possible to bring their natural qualities to perfection. Members and breeders should accept the standard of the breed as approved by The American Kennel Club as the only standard of excellence by which Spinoni shall be judged.
